Technology is transforming our way of life and the future of work. Many observations show we are moving towards a digital future powered by data, machines, and artificial intelligence. The impact and importance of science and technology will be felt in a way and to a degree that we have never experienced before. AI, automation, and robotics will touch or power many systems and aspects of our lives.  Why does this matter?

Consider this:

  • The technology sector is the largest and most valuable industry in the world.  A position it has held at least for the last half-decade (Silicon Republic, 2016).
  • The technology sector boasts high job growth. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the growth of employment in computer and information technology occupations will outpace any other career category in the next decade (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019).
  • The technology sector salaries are among the highest. According to the BLS, the median annual wage for computing and tech is twice that of any other career category.  BLS reported that the computer and information technology occupations “median wage was 88,240 in May 2019” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019).

The design of these systems and the advancement of science are greatly influenced by the lens, priorities, mindset, and lived experiences of those in the field. Strong math, science, and computing skills are important gateways to growth, opportunity, and success. Who has access to educational and career pathways will matter even more.
